No-flame conveyor belts: certified safety and technical expertise from Kauman

What is a no-flame conveyor belt and why is it critical in industrial safety?

No-flame conveyor belts are solutions specifically formulated to reduce the risk of fire or flame propagation in continuous material handling systems. They are designed with rubber compounds and conductive elements that minimize static electricity generation and limit the flammability of the belt material, protecting both facilities and personnel in sectors where risk is significant.

In industries such as mining, energy, ports, or handling of combustible products, this type of belt is not only recommended: it is a key piece for complying with industrial safety criteria and specific regulations aimed at preventing serious accidents.

How does the EN 12882 standard classify no-flame conveyor belts?

The EN 12882 standard establishes electrical safety and flammability protection requirements for general-use conveyor belts (non-underground use).

Within this standard, there are categories indicating the level of safety depending on the application. The most common for no-flame applications are:

  • Class 2A
Belts with no-flame properties with full covers.
The cover maintains the ability to limit flame propagation, but it depends on cover wear.
Equivalent to traditional DIN “K” grade.
  • Class 2B
Belts with no-flame properties both with full covers and without them, offering more complete protection even when the surface is worn.
Equivalent to “S” grade under historical DIN schemes.

Manufacturing other safety classes is possible. At Kauman, we can offer no-flame solutions adapted to the required level of each application and operating environment.

EN 14973 standard and requirements for no-flame conveyor belts in underground mining

When talking about underground applications, the applicable standard is EN 14973. This standard defines electrical and fire behavior requirements for conveyor belts used in potentially flammable or explosive atmospheres, as occurs in mining.

EN 14973 classifies belts according to protection level and usage conditions, highlighting among others:

  • Class B1: Use in potentially flammable atmospheres without secondary safety devices.
  • Class B2: Use where secondary safety devices are present.

Additionally, in Spain, these standards are integrated into the technical criteria for operating conveyor belts in underground mining, indicating which classes are required based on the presence of firedamp, dust, or other risks.

In this context, official laboratory homologation and certification is an indispensable requirement to ensure belts meet safety demands and can be legally used in mining operations.

Kauman certifications and homologations

At Kauman, we are certified by the Official Laboratory J.M. Madariaga as a manufacturer of products suitable for mining and, specifically, we have no-flame conveyor belts homologated for underground mining, including:

  • EP1250/4-4+2 — Class B1
  • EP2000/4-6+3 — Class B2

These homologations certify that our products have been tested and approved according to applicable requirements in flammable risk environments, such as underground mining.
